Lassa Virus The Lassa virus is a vulgar virus with a high mortality rate and an expensive cure. Lassa was strange to me because I have never heard of the virus before. As I was reading in my research, I began to realize the risk the virus has on people. Lassa was first discovered, in humans, in a village in northern Nigeria (Andrechek). Lassa outbreaks have been reported in Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone and Zaire, which are all countries in West Africa (Andrechek). There have been reports of the Lassa virus out side of West Africa but those were in health care workers who had previously worked in that area. There is an estimate of 200,000 to 400,000 cases of Lassa Fever annually, thousands fatal (Andrechek). The mortality among hospital cases is 15%, but if untreated is 60%. The way the Virus is treated is with Ribavirin for ten days. If the infected person gets treatment within six days his mortality rate drops to 5% to 9% in medium to high risk group. If the virus is not treated within six days, but is treated after six days, the mortality rate skyrockets to 26% to 47% (Andrechek). Mortality is 2 to 3 times higher it is found in pregnant or post portum women. The Ribavirin can be stored in room temperature places, but is very expensive and is hard to get to people in need within six days. There is an alternate way of treating the virus with the Mozambique Virus (MV) that eats the Lassa virus, but the risk of mortality is increased dramatically. This "MV" is administered only if the disease it is a life or death situation between the one to six day period. There isn't a real cure for the virus. You can only hope it dies away with the treatment, but they are still working on that. The way Lassa Fever was originally transmitted was through rats' urine and saliva (Andrechek). The spread of Lassa is still spread by rats. It is also an aerosol, which mean that it is a disease that is transmitted through the air, but this is very rare. The most efficient way to get Lassa is through a rodent bite. People can also transmit Lassa. It can be transmitted by sex and by an aerosol method. Lassa is a level IV on the Biosafety scale (Andrechek). Which is the second highest Biosafety level. That means it is a highly contagious and deadly disease. Areas where the Lassa is transmitted are very poor and have little, to no sanitation. The effects on the body are numerous and shocking. In the gastrointestinal system the effects include abdominal pain that leads to vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation and painful swallowing (Ling). In the respiratory system includes sore throat, pharyngitis, chest pain, and coughing (Ling). The way Lassa effects the cardiovascular system is scary, and includes: pericarditis, facial and neck edema (capillary leakage), bleeding of the gums, nose, GI and vagina, and increased blood pressure and heart rate (Ling). Other ways Lassa Fever effects your body is through dehydration, shock, meningitis, deafness, mental confusion, and seizures, which occur hours before death. The effects on children are strange also. They include bleeding, abdominal distention, foaming at the mouth and global edema, which is when the skin feels and looks like a balloon. That is also referred to as "swollen baby syndrome" (Andrechek). These effects have a great deal to do with the Biosafety rating given to this disease. The Lassa virus is not a well-known virus, but has a huge mortality rate. This was not a good statistic I found. There are too many diseases in the world but if we try we can at least try to stop that spread of these diseases. If we contain the diseased area and isolate it, we will have attained a step closer to the ultimate goal. The goal is to have a world with out disease.

However there are a few problems with their reasoning. For one, they claim that the stress of choosing how much time to take off adversely affects the employee. Also, they believe that employees who spend more time at work are more loyal to the company, but offer nothing to back that claim up. Finally, they define happy and productive as ultra-loyal, ultra-achieving. Is this what makes everyone happy? Lets take a look at these statements. The company says that by relieving the employee of the decision of how much time to take off, they will relieve stress that could adversely affect the employee, both at home and at the office. Is making this decision really so burdensome? I dont believe so, especially when compared to the stress of having a new baby at home. One would think this would be the least of the employees worries! Also, the employee may now be faced with a whole new set of problems relating to not having enough time at home with the baby, such as finding child care for such a young baby, and leaving the baby all day without the mother or baby being ready. These situations could cause much more stress than the simple one of how much time to take off. The company also claims that those employees who spend more time at the company are more loyal. Perhaps it is indeed the case that the more loyal employees spend more time at the office, but is the reverse true? They offer no proof. By taking a major life decision out of the employeeââ¬â¢s control, the company may cause resentment and lower the workers loyalty. Their loyalty may also be lowered by the company lessening a benefit that had previously been granted. Finally, the statement says at the same time that this change will create happier and more productive workers, but at the same time ultra-loyal, ultra-achieving employees. While this may indeed be the companys idea of happy and productive, I doubt that every employee would be happiest as an ultra-achiever. Although some people do make their job the most important thing in their life, and put most of their time and energy into it- and receive most of their fulfillment from it- I dont think the same can be said for everyone. Some people have interests outside work, such as travel or a hobby. These people will not be made happier by being forced to spend more time at work. This basic assumption is flawed. Also, it leaves out the large group of people for which family is the most important thing in their life- the very people that this decision will negatively affect. These people will not be made happier by being an ultra-achieving employee; they would be made happier by having more time home with their children. So one can see the companys statement is making a lot of assumptions that are not being backed up- is the decision of how much time to take off for parental leave really adding that much stress to workers lives? Are people who are forced to spend more time at work really going to be more loyal to the company? And will this decision really make these ultra-achieving employees happy? I dont believe the company has made a good case for itself. Electromagnetic Induction and Faraday's Law Electromagnetic induction (also known as Faradays law of electromagnetic induction or just induction, but not to be confused with inductive reasoning), is a process where a conductor placed in a changing magnetic field (or a conductor moving through a stationary magnetic field) causes the production of a voltage across the conductor. This process of electromagnetic induction, in turn, causes an electrical current- it is said to induce the current. Discovery of Electromagnetic Induction Michael Faraday is given credit for the discovery of electromagnetic induction in 1831, though some others had noted similar behavior in the years prior to this. The formal name for the physics equation that defines the behavior of an induced electromagnetic field from the magnetic flux (change in a magnetic field) is Faradays law of electromagnetic induction. The process of electromagnetic induction works in reverse as well, so that a moving electrical charge generates a magnetic field. In fact, a traditional magnetà is the result of the individual motion of the electrons within the individual atoms of the magnet, aligned so that the generated magnetic field is in a uniform direction. In non-magnetic materials, the electrons move in such a way that the individual magnetic fields point in different directions, so they cancel each other out and the net magnetic field generated is negligible. Maxwell-Faraday Equation The more generalized equation is one of Maxwells equations, called the Maxwell-Faraday equation, which defines the relationship between changes in electrical fields and magnetic fields. It takes the form of: âËâ¡Ãâ"E ââ¬â âËâB / âËât where the âËâ¡Ãâ" notation is known as the curl operation, the E is the electric field (a vector quantity) and B is the magnetic field (also a vector quantity). Twelve Angry Men Essay Twelve Angry Men depicts different types of leadership, communication, and group dynamics. The film revolves around the jurisdiction of a homicide trial with a jury that almost unanimously votes the defendant guilty, with only one opposing voter. This man, Juror #8, presents his decision through ideas of reasonable doubt that spiral into a majority vote of not-guilty. So, how does a group of twelve men completely shift their point of view from guilty to not-guilty? The power of effective leadership and communication. Juror #8 was able to effectively communicate with the men to think of other scenarios that prove the defendant not-guilty through democratic styled leadership. He did not necessarily think the defendant was not guilty. However, he was not positive the boy was guilty and did not want to make a decision without 100% confidence. Therefore, he communicated his view by encouraging the jury to examine the facts in a new light and opening a discussion amongst the jurors. The re-analyzation of the facts arose new questions about the verity of the facts, allowing some, and eventually all, of the jurors to question their original declaration of guilty. Lack of leadership and communication from the majority are also factors in the change of decision. The group of 11 men did not have a solid leader to hold together their original verdict. In the beginning, juror #1 was the apparent leader of the group. He stated the jury procedures and inquired each manââ¬â¢s vote. When opposition from juror #8 arose, he attempted to get the group to dismiss the idea. Eventually, he loses interest in caring and steps back as the leader. A disinterest by other jurors was also seen when some were playing games. It was also evident that some jurors only went with the majority based on hidden agendas such as wanting the trial to be over or personal opinions of people such as prejudices. In addition, Juror #3 is the prime opposer to the questions presented by juror #8. He is vocal about his confidence in his decision towards the defendant. However, his leadership style was of an autocratic nature, which worked to his disadvantage. People are more likely to follow a kind leader than someone who belittles and frightens. Therefore, Juror #8 had effective communication to win over the quiet jurors who were first too intimidated to question the majority. He dominated the discussion and lead with powerful points that left the jurors thinking. He created an open discussion. This lead to jurors asking valid questions on the verity of the facts presented. Turning points came when a witnessââ¬â¢ testimony was questioned due to their poor vision proved through glasses marks on her nose, the angel of the manââ¬â¢s wound from the stab, presenting a knife that was claimed to be one of a kind, and the actual time it wold take for the witness to see what happened after they heard the scream. The film also shows how leadership thrives with the addition of followers. Without followers one cannot be declared a leader. If juror #8 stated and expressed reasons for his view and no others followed, the decision would have been in the majorityââ¬â¢s favor and juror #8 would have just been a man with an opinion. Instead, he was able to first convince juror #9, which immediately gave his opinion credibility. Once juror #9 switched sides, it was evident that everyone else re-examined their opinion and started to formulate valid questions. Juror #9 was able to break the hold of group think, allowing others to actually voice their thoughts. This especially pertains to the quiet jurors who were originally too intimidated to question the majority. These jurors were now actually able to think for themselves and were open to communicate juror #8ââ¬â¢s points of reasonable doubt. Twelve Angry Men is also an interesting depiction of group dynamics. In a group, decision-making can be hindered due to majority process. When a majority is present, it is easy for others to join in. This was displayed in the beginning of the film. There were a couple to quickly charge the defendant as guilty and others followed, although some appeared hesitant. They only made a decision once they saw the other opinions. This is a common problem in a group setting. It is too much effort to be the odd man out. Therefore, the quieter and more timid people conform to the majority for an easy solution. Juror #8 intelligently realized this group dynamic and intelligently focused his attention to the quiet members. He asked that another vote be taken by secret ballots. This is an effective way of voting that allowed for better communication, allowing the quieter jurors to submit their vote in private. This proved effective when the vote switched from 11-1 to 10-2. This lead to an open discussion amongst many in the group, drawing valuable ideas and opinions that they might not have offered otherwise. Juror #8 created a setting for group discussion where everyone started to work together as a team to determine the verdict of the case. As a team, the jury unanimously shifted their vote to not-guilty; an excellent demonstration on the power of effective communication and leadership.

Her father, Felix Waldstein, was a well-known member of the German parliament and Margret was use to a lot of activities in the large house that was home to five children, four servants, and a dog, as well as her father's political colleagues, who were frequent visitors. Margret Rey received formal art training at the Bauhaus in 1927. She studied at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art from 1928 to 1929 at which time she held one-woman art shows of her watercolors in Berlin in the early thirties. After working as a professional photographer in Berlin and London, Margret went to Rio de Janiero in 1935. There she became reacquainted with H. A. Rey, whom she had first known in Hamburg when he was dating her older sister. The two worked together to create a very small advertising agency. They were married in Rio de Janiero in 1935, and took their honeymoon in Europe in 1936. Hans sold bathtubs up and down the Amazon River to make extra money for the couple to live on while trying to get their work published in Europe. They then stayed in Paris for four years. In 1939, their lives in Paris were cut short by the Nazi invasion. It was at this time that they had already begun their work on the manuscript of Curious George. They had to pack what they could and flee Paris. Taking the Curious George manuscript with them, the Reys fled on bicycles and eventually completed the book in the south of France. They arrived in New York in October of 1940, and Houghton Mifflin published Curiou s George in 1941. Blacks only migrated to the United States. You find that most a times, the black usually move to the united states in search of increased standards of living say education and jobs. Most of the immigrants to the United States are blacks. Racism is one of the central features in the united states society since blacks and other people of colour are have discriminated so much in many fields. You find that most of the blacks and even the black Americans are usually discriminated on their race. For example in the areas of employment, blacks are usually seen as unproductive and hence discriminated in these areas. Its argued that most of Its forms have recently à changed but, in this case à we only need to look no further than the rates in unemployment which black people normally face, the rising levels of property by the blacks as when compared to the citizens of that country and, life expectancy rates, incomes as when compared to the citizens of that country and the stereotypes in the mass media à in orderà to understand that racism and racial inequality still remains in the united states. (Allport, 2003). The value of racism that is examined in this case is that historically we find that racism can be analyzed as a central aspect of most of the economic system. In this case I can examine the Marxist theory which says that racism is supposed to only serve the capitalists or even the wealthy in the society at the expense of the suffering few. Also in the theory colonialism, many groups have come up with many theories that based their arguments and challenged racial injustice. All this is said to have happened in the early 60s and 70s.This theory needs to be modified and itââ¬â¢s also relevant to examine the United States societies although it needs to be modified, it is relevant to examine the United States societies and its impacts to the blacks who live in the United States. (Butler, 1997). In the dual labour market, you find that the blacks are usually neglected in both the public and the private sectors. The issue of wages has been dodged by controversy which leaves us with the question of what can be considered as the right wages. A right wage can be said to be a compensation for a service offered which equals the amount of effort that was used in the service. Going with the labor theories, employer has a moral duty of ensuring that they pay the employees a wage which is equal to their input in their services.à An engineer will not be expected to be paid the same amount of wage as a casual laborer. These are some of the segmentation in the labor market that we have to agree with. But in most of the dual sectors that is the public and the private sectors, you find that, blacks are usually discriminated and usually do hard work with only small wages. (Butler, 1997). Institutional discrimination is also evident in the blacks who stay in the United States. In most of these institutions, you find that blacks are usually denied access to some of the institutions.Ofcourse institutional discrimination is something which blacks have faced for quite a long time. For example, during the early times, blacks were forced in to institutional slavery. In this case, blacks were usually captured and taken as slavery by the American. Even today some of these cases do happen since you find that most of the blacks who go stay in America are forced to do hard work since they are discriminated in certain institutions. (Butler, 1997). Double jeopardy does not happen to the blacks who live in the United States. Double jeopardy can be taken as the case when a criminal is supposed to be tried for a second time of the crime committed. In this case, blacks are not double jeopardized since there is a law which governs human rights and even for the immigrants who live in the United States. (Allport, 2003). Redlining also happens to the blacks which live in the United States. Redlining means the case when the costs of living are increased or even denied to some groups of individuals. But for this case, the blacks are denied their standards of living despite the human rights constitution which states that immigrants should be protected. In this case, redlining can be seen in various accesses to jobs. Most of the blacks are usually denied access to job facilities and are mostly supposed to do the casual activities over there. There costs of living are low as when compared to the citizens of that country. Evvironmental justice is also accorded to the blacks who stay in the United States. You find that the human rights act which is set by various non governmental programs to help protect immigrants who come to unites states have been applied in most of these cases. People have the right to move to any country and enjoy the benefits of that country just like anybody else. Affirmative action can be seen in the areas of employment. Out of research, it has been found that employer support for affirmative action has a significant and positive influence on the blacks who stay in the United States and this can be seen at the higher job levels. (Allport, 2003). Conclusion Blacks are one of the ethnic groups in the United States. They migrated to the United States in search of jobs, higher education and also increased standards of living. Despite their movement to these places, they usually face a lot of discrimination. For example they face a lot of racial discrimination. An Analysis of Pieter Brueghelââ¬â¢s Painting, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus And W.H. Audenââ¬â¢s Poem, Musee des Beaux Arts
Pieter Brueghel, a 16th century Renaissance painter whose paintings have allegorical meanings. His painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus was his only subject taken from Greek mythology. While his contemporariesââ¬â¢ work focused more on religious subjects, Brueghel on the other hand made his own mark by creating his own painting style; he was famous for his landscape paintings inhabited by peasants. His painting which is rich in imagery portrays the season of spring when Icarus fell into the sea, there is a farmer plowing the field, and the sea shore is busy with different activities. All these things come to life in Brueghelââ¬â¢s painting (www. pieter-bruegel-the-elder. org). W. H. Audenââ¬â¢s poem, Musee des Beaux Arts was written upon his visit to the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels in 1938. His poem was influenced by Pieter Brueghelââ¬â¢s painting, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. For Auden, the poem reflected the peopleââ¬â¢s indifference toward human suffering. The ââ¬Å"miraculous birthâ⬠of a child was seen as insignificant since the children went about ââ¬Å"skating on a pond at the edge of the woodâ⬠not mindful of the great occurrence which Auden likened to the birth of Christ. While ordinary people could disregard such phenomenal events; Auden pointed out that the Old Masters concentrated on such themes that were reflected on their art works (www. audensociety. org). It is also surprising that no one noticed the fall of Icarus into the sea, there was a splatter and there was an implication that Icarus was drowning and yet no one cared. The farmer continued plowing his field, the ship did not bother to stop and help Icarus instead it continued to sail. Auden believed that in Breughelââ¬â¢s painting, the fall of Icarus is parallel to the martyrdom of Christ. You can find the average ACT scores of different colleges in the PrepScholar database by googling ââ¬Å"prepscholar (name of school) ACTâ⬠to find a schoolââ¬â¢s profile. On the school profile, you can see its average GPA, average ACT score, and acceptance rate. For example, according to the PrepScholar database, the average ACT score forBerkeley is a 30. Also, Berkeley's average GPA is a 3.86 and its acceptance rate is 18%. The University of Oklahoma has an average ACT score of 26, an average GPA of 3.59, and an acceptance rate of 80%. What Does the Average ACT Score of a College Mean to You? If you want to get into a certain school, your ACT score should be comparable to the average score for the collegeââ¬â¢s admits. To give yourself the best chance of gaining admission to a specific school, we recommend that your goal should be to get at least a 75th percentile score for that college. The 75th percentile score for Berkeley is a 33; therefore, if you want to go to Berkeley, your target score should be a 33. Because Berkeley's acceptance rate is only around 18%, you should try to surpass its average score to have a decent shot of gaining admission. Similiarly, the 75th percentile score for Oklahoma is a 29. If you dream of becoming a Sooner, you should shoot for a 29 on your ACT. Furthermore, because a certain number of spots will go to athletes, legacies, and children of big-time donors, your qualifications may have to be better than average if you arenââ¬â¢t in one of these categories. What If You Donââ¬â¢t Get Your Target Score? If you donââ¬â¢t get the 75th percentile score or even the average ACT score for a specific college, that doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean that you have no chance of getting accepted. However, if you still have time to reach your target score, itââ¬â¢s probably in your best interest tostudy and attempt toimprove your score. You can compensate for lower test scores with a higher GPA. Generally, schools place a greater emphasis on your transcript than on your standardized test scores. Also, on each schoolââ¬â¢s profile in the PrepScholar database, you can use our admissions calculator by entering your GPA and ACT score to get an estimate of your chances of gaining admission to that school. Furthermore, keep in mind that colleges tend to use holistic admissions, meaning that everything is considered when colleges determine whom to admit. Theyââ¬â¢ll evaluate your transcript, test scores, extracurricular activities, recommendations, application essays, and any other factors that admissions officers deem relevant. If you've faced any significant obstacles or you're from an impoverished background, colleges will also take this into account. Just because you donââ¬â¢t reach your target score doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean that you have no chance to get admitted. However, while most colleges don't claim to have a minimum ACT score, if your score isn't close to the average score for a particular school, you may have virtually no chance of getting accepted. Even if you have great grades and stellar extracurricular accomplishments, you probably don't have a realistic shot of getting into Princeton if your ACT score is lower than 20. While standardized tests aren't the only determining factor in college admissions, most colleges use the ACT to ensure that you're capable of succeeding academically. Your ACT score matters! The Verb To Twit The Verb ââ¬Å"To Twitâ⬠The Verb ââ¬Å"To Twitâ⬠By Maeve Maddox Sometimes being ignorant is not such a bad thing. As widely as I read in all kinds of sources, I was ignorant of what has happened to the verb twit. I knew that it was old-fashioned of me to use it as a synonym for tease, but I like the word. Iââ¬â¢d no inkling of the other meanings that are out there. For example, some speakers assign sexual connotations to the word. (Iââ¬â¢m not even going there in this post.) The verb twit comes from Old English atwite, ââ¬Å"to blame, to reproach.â⬠It used to be spelled twite and was pronounced with a long i. It has lost the final e and is now pronounced with a short i. The unabridged online OED I use gives this as the first definition: twit transitive verb: To blame, find fault with, censure, reproach, upbraid (a person), especially in a light or annoying way; to cast an imputation upon; to taunt. The OED app on my phone gives this definition: twit (twits, twitting, twitted) verb: tease or taunt (someone), especially in a good-humoured way. The first definition given in Merriam-Webster is ââ¬Å"to subject to ridicule or reproach.â⬠In my Web searches, I did find examples of twit used in the sense of ridicule, but I must admit that most of them date from the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. The modern examples I found tend to be from countries other than the United States. Enter Twitter. Created in 2006, the social media site Twitter has altered the use of twit in all its forms in the minds of millions. As far as I knew, the verb for publishing a message via Twitter is ââ¬Å"to tweet,â⬠and such a message is called ââ¬Å"a tweet.â⬠However, in my search for examples of twit used in the sense of tease or taunt, I discovered numerous examples of twit being used like tweet in the context of posting a message on Twitter: Elon Muskà twitted thatà the smaller and lower costing sedan will start production in about 2 years, but not before debuting in March 2016. However, Saraki on his twitter handle laterà twitted, I can now confirm that I just received the list of ministerial nominees. A third-party developer, Steve Stroughton-Smith,à twitted thatà Bugdom 2 is one of the first 3DTV-enabled titles to enter the new tvOS AppStore. Send a Twit and receive a coupon. Prime Minister David Cameronà posted a twit, in which he condemned theà attack. I have never met Stella Paul in person. But I have read her write-ups and her twits and they have kindled a light in me to do something for my own country.à This use of twit for tweet is twitted by many Twitter users, but thereââ¬â¢s already a new social media platform that has adopted the name Stocktwits. Another meaning of twit as a noun is ââ¬Å"a fool; a stupid or ineffectual person.â⬠Writers who know this definition as well as the ââ¬Å"tauntâ⬠meaning play on the words to produce punning humor: A few days ago, former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska) took toà Twitter, and twittedà Barack Obama once again. I resigned because Twitter is making such twits of politicians. The child then becomes desperate of love and care, and consequently walks out to explore alternatives to enable survival. It is under such circumstances that a child may learn improper behaviors and conducts, which may result serious family problems (Nichols, 2013). Another motive that may make a therapist blame a mother for the problems facing a child relates to situations where the mother formed a triangle relationship with a child against father or other family members. A mother forming triangle relationship with a child is likely to discuss negative issues, which are usually inappropriate for the age of a child. This kind of relationship can make a child become schizophrenic or withdraw socially depending on the nature of information shared. Nichols (2013) warns that blaming any individual in the process of family therapy may compromise the entire treatment. Blaming a family such a mother may pile all the problems faced a family on the mother and encourage other members to hate the former. Hatred in families is undesirable and may only work to scuttle and ruin entire system of a family. The move by a therapist to blame a parent on problems of a child may also lead to early withdrawal or discourage active participation of the victim in the treatment
