What’s up The next few weeks are going to be something different. To start, it is 3:30 am Friday night and I am moving back to EC tomorrow starting 11am. I dont know how I did this 2 months ago, how do you pack up everything you own in a few hours and still get some sleep? Laundry is tumble-drying in the bexley basement. I went to a movie tonight called Vicky Christina Barcelona playing at the Kendall theater. Went in pouring rain in a tank top and a skirt, soaked my shoes and walked home barefoot. Now its about 4 and out come the cardboard boxes and the cats are just having a field day they know something is definitely up. At 5:30 4 boxes are packed and a suitcase and a large duffle bag. I look out the window and see the sun is coming up. Tomorrow after moving my things back to EC, Im driving back home with my parents to spend the last few days of summer in CT before heading out to Burning Man which is about a 10 hour drive from san francisco in the middle of the Nevada desert which would be my first time out to this event, camping with about 20 students/alums from MIT, our shelter, the Laplacetopede, named in honor of the great mathematician, along with our shade structure, a geodesic dome, in the center of our camp, this year named Z-Transform, after the discrete version of Laplaces great transform operator. Why Laplace? I dont know. I might have picked Pauli myself. But Im not in charge of that. Im in charge of feeding 20 people for 7 days in the desert. The month of august has been a great busy time for all. I think the pressure of the impending summers end is what has been driving me to get up and about. Some things Ive been up to: Really seeing the city. I guess if I had to pick, I certainly do regret not having gotten out into the city sooner. Though Im quite familiar with central and the harvard square area, I realized when my cousin came to visit that Id never actually been down by the harbor or to the financial district of boston, and Id only been down to chinatown and the downtown crossing area once or twice. Boston is a breathtaking city. The air is clean and unpolluted, the waterfront area is definitely worth the visit. Walking is fine, but a fixed up old road bike really makes getting around a treat. One thing though, if you get motion sick easily, I wouldnt recommend going whale watching :/ Learning to sail. 3 free Wednesday classes with the easy-going folks down at the MIT boathouse later, and Im ready to pick up my sailing card at the pavilion. If Id known it was so easy, I would have probably done it a long time ago. After all, I did pass the sailing and boating swim test during orientation freshman year with the last ounce of my strength. Saturday night after Ive gone, the pavilion will be hosting its monthly moonlight sailing event under the full moon. It would have been my first time going and I just think it would have been such a sight. Instead, coming out of a house party in CT saturday night at the house of some family friends, I catch a glimpse of the high full moon through the trees before falling asleep on the dark road home. Getting together some sort of exercise regimen. For some unknown reason, MITs athletic facilities (DAPER) decided in the last year or so to close off its summer facilities to all but paid members. What used to be included in the cost of your tuition is now a $40 extra membership fee for use of the gym/pool during the summer. What many people dont know I discovered accidentally, which is that a half-summer long membership is offered for $25. As I didnt get around to doing the paperwork until mid-July, that is all I had to pay. Still, come mid-August, and I still havent put that membership to good use. Then one day last week I started going to the pool. Ran off to the gym to work out and tumble, and hopped in the pool to cool off. Thats about when I realized that I couldnt even swim 10 meters without losing my breath. So this is what I do now after work. 3 days going, ive gotten back my standing backhandspring and can swim about 2 laps freestyle in the 50m pool. I figure once I get that floating feeling back thatll improve quite rapidly. This weekend is reading blogger applications. Its catching up with a few old high school friends. Its olympics and kitchen renovations and sleeping regularly and missing the goings on at school. In other news, waking up at 3pm and running into Lobdell for a smoothie/soba chicken breakfast, I ran into a sign for orientation check-in. What the hell. :P

It’s been chosen as the  summer reading  for all incoming NYU undergraduate students because the transition to college can be a step into a larger, more public, and more diverse world of ideas, people, and cultures. Our hope is that reading  Educated  will prompt students to both reflect on their personal journeys, as well as on the mosaic of experienc es that they anticipate during their time at college – from adapting to a new environment, to finding mentors and seeking help, to assuming responsibility for their education.â€Å"The Gods of Gotham† by Lyndsay Faye Why I recommend this book:  Many of our undergraduate students not only had the pleasure of reading the suspenseful historical mystery novel  The Gods of Gotham  in our Stern Undergraduate College Book Club but were also treated to a discussion of the book by author Lyndsay Faye  this spring. It’s the first in a series that follows a New York City bartender-turned-police officer, Timothy Wilde, as he solves a crime. The book is set in 1845, but it’s no stretch to see how many issues raised throughout the book – religious tensions, racial prejudice, corruption, party politics, and human exploitation – are still relevant today. Although the characters in  The Gods of Gotham  more often finds itself in a nefarious 1845- era underworld of New York City, any transplant, visitor, or native to our city will still relish the vivid picture of it painted by Faye. Dean Raghu Sundaram, New York University’s Stern School of Businessâ€Å"Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World† by Cal NewportWhy I recommend this book: I love technology, but a couple of years back, I realized that many of my technologies were getting in my way, making me less happy, and reducing my productivity. A digital detox helps in the short term, but what I really needed were sustainable strategies for making technology work for me, not the other way around.  Cal Newport’s book does just that by offering strategies for how technology can make us happier, more productive, and able to live a fulfilling, healthy, and meaningful life. The practices in this book are must-reads in today’s digital world.â€Å"Stress Less, Accomplish More: Meditation for Extraordinary Performance† by Emi ly FletcherWhy I recommend this book: Emily Fletcher has taught the power of meditation to employees at some of the biggest companies in the world, and she’s regarded as one of the leading experts in using mediation to sustain high performance. Fletcher’s new book offers techniques anyone can use to explore the role meditation may have in helping unlock professional performance and personal fulfillment. Dean Scott DeRue, University of Michigan’s Ross School of Businessâ€Å"AIQ: How People and Machines are Smarter Together† by Nick Polson and James Scott  Why I recommend this book: Not only is this book co-authored by one of our star faculty members, James Scott, it is also an enjoyable and thought-provoking read. The authors explain the ways that data and statistics interact to enable advances in technology while also showing some of the historical arc that has led us to this new digital, data-driven age.â€Å"The Big Short† by Michael LewisWhy I recommend this book: Michael Lewis has a gift for explaining otherwise complex ideas, and this book gives a great view of the issues that led up to the 2008 financial crisis. For new undergraduates who are used to an economy that is expanding, this will give some perspective as to what can go wrong. Plus, we are still working through some aspects of the post-crisis hangover, from regulatory and structural perspectives. Dean Jay Hartzell, University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Businessâ€Å"Thirst†Ã‚  by Scott HarrisonWhy I recommend this book: This is a powerful story detailing one person’s journey towards finding purpose and doing work that truly matters.   In an inspirational way, it’s shows us the joy and satisfaction that comes from helping to make the world a better place.â€Å"The Person You Mean to Be: How Good People Fight Bias† by Dolly Chugh  Why I recommend this book: This is a wonderful book that shows us how to think d ifferently, and most important, act differently when it comes to affecting positive change. Chugh provides us with an eye-opening guide to becoming the person we’d truly like to be, and not just be a good person, but a good-ish person, who is always moving forward. Dean Kate Walsh, Cornell’s SC Johnson College of Business, School of Hotel Administrationâ€Å"Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived Joyful Life† by Bill Burnet and Dave Evans  Why I recommend this book: I think it is important for business majors take co-ownership for designing a well-lived life and career (not just focusing on a job). This book provides a holistic approach by discussing the importance of values, exploratory mindset, prototyping, and team work as factors to consider when designing a life.â€Å"Opening Belle† by Maureen Sherry Why I recommend this book:  This fiction book is about women working in an investment bank and the challenges they have to manage. How To Get Started With Historical Reenacting

Have you often wondered what it might have been like to actually live in the past? Historical reenacting gives you that chance. Becoming a historical re-enactor requires an unquenchable thirst for history and abiding patience with uncomfortable accommodations and ridiculous outfits. Short of actually traveling back in time, however, there is no better way to learn about history than by living it first-hand as a reenactor. What Is a Reenactor? Reenactors recreate history by portraying the look, actions, and lives of a person from a particular time period of history. Who Can Become a Reenactor? Just about anyone with an interest in reenactment can become a reenactor. Children can usually even participate, although most reenactment groups have a minimum age (12 or 13 is common) for children to be allowed in more dangerous roles, such as on the battlefield. Most reenactment organizations also wont allow children under 16 to bear arms. If you choose an active reenactment role, youll need to be in good health, capable of the physical activity and lack of everyday comforts that are inherent in reenacting. Most reenactors are everyday people from all walks of life, with ages ranging from 16 to people in their sixties. What to Expect From Reenacting Reenacting for many is a serious, but fun, event. Most people take their roles seriously and pride themselves on representing history as accurately as possible. Some people do take the authenticity to an extreme, but most groups welcome anyone with an interest. Reenacting does require a commitment, however, in both time and resources. Reproduction clothing can cost several hundred dollars, and reproduction period rifles as much as $1000. Reenactment, appropriately called living history, also means living under the same conditions encountered during the past. This can mean everything from uncomfortable clothes and terrible food to inclement weather and a poor excuse for a bed. Hard-core reenactors give up all amenities of modern life, from deodorant to modern wristwatches. Reenactment also takes time, but this can be as little as a 2-3 hour event once or twice a year, to a half-dozen three-day weekend encampments. How to Get Started With Reenacting Youve probably thought to yourself that reenacting sounds like fun, but youre just not sure about committing yourself due to time, money, and lack of know-how. Dont let that stop you! Most reenactment groups are very welcoming to new people and will show you the ropes and even outfit you until you can gradually acquire your own kit. In other words, you can try it out and see how you like it. Choose a Time Period and Location What period of history most grabs your interest? Did you have ancestors who participated in a particular war? Do you have a passion for Ancient Rome, medieval fashion, or Colonial America, and the Salem Witch Trials? Find a Reenactment Group Time and place generally work together, so while youre picking your time period, you will generally have a certain location in mind as well. Most people choose a reenactment group that operates fairly close to home - at least within a days drive. Reenactment groups and societies can be found all over the world, although they are especially active in the U.S., UK, Germany, Sweden, Canada, and Australia. Check your local newspaper or reenactment Web sites for listings of upcoming reenactment events in your area. Most large re-enactment events take place outdoors, so spring through fall are very active times of the year for the majority of these groups. Attend a few such reenactment events and talk to members of the involved groups to learn more about their reenactment focus and activities. Choose a Persona In a reenactment, a persona is a character and role that you choose to portray. The persona is sometimes referred to as an impression. Depending upon your reenactment scenario, this may be a real individual or a fictional one who could have lived during your time period of interest. Think about who you are in real life,  or the person you secretly want to be, and translate that to an individual who lived during your time period of interest. The majority of reenactors choose to be soldiers, but even in a military reenactment group, there are other characters, such as wives, camp followers, surgeons, tinkers and sutlers (merchants). The persona you select should have some personal significance to you. Research Your Persona Once youve chosen a time period and character, you need to learn everything you can,  from the way they dressed and ate, to their manner of speech, cultural beliefs, and social interactions. Immerse yourself in the time period by reading books and primary source documents related to the area, and the type of person youve chosen to portray. Assemble Your Kit Reenactors refer to their clothing and equipment as their  kit. Whether youve chosen to be a fur trapper, a soldier or a medieval princess, this clothing and accessories you select for your kit should match your persona. If youre portraying a poor farmer during the Revolutionary War, then dont purchase a fancy rifle that would have been out of his financial grasp. Take the time to fully research your character and period, considering where your  persona  lives, his age, his  occupation, and his social status, before purchasing items which may or may not be authentic or appropriate. If you have the time, it can even be fun to learn to make some of your clothing or items yourself, just as it was done in the past. Final Tips   Most reenactment groups have extra clothing, uniforms,  costumes, and props that they are willing to loan to newcomers. By joining such a society, youll have time to try out your persona before committing to any major purchases for your own kit.
